The Winter Gardens is wild with excitement over the imminent arrival of some very special cast members. Thankfully the venue’s Opera House theatre, with its soaring ceilings and expansive stage, has wings wide enough for its biggest ever characters to make an entrance this July.
For the magnificent line-up in ENSEMBLE Theatre’s production of the much-loved family musical Doctor Dolittle includes a life-size giraffe, elephant, penguins, monkeys, Polynesia the parrot, and of course, the two-headed pushmi-pullyu.
Most of these epic scale creations will be made by the award-winning VIP Puppets in Liverpool, whose hand-crafted animals have been seen on TV, in museums and zoos, and at festivals and events all over the world, from Chester to China - with clients including CBBC, Glastonbury and Barefoot Zambia.
Andy Vitolo, Creative Director and founder of critically acclaimed ENSEMBLE, can’t wait to get his teeth into the stage version of the famous 1967 movie, which starred Rex Harrison in the title role. “This is an incredibly exciting show for Blackpool,” he said. “Visually it will be absolutely stunning, with an extravagant set and puppets families will never have seen the likes of before in Blackpool. This is Mary Poppins meets the Lion King in the heart of the resort. VIP Puppets’ designs are tremendous. I can guarantee there will be lots of jaws dropping in the audience. And for the first time ever there will be a Sunday matinee performance, enabling younger children and weekend holidaymakers an extra opportunity to see the show.”
The stage musical with book, music and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse - who co-wrote the score for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Anthony Newley - features the same songs as the film, including the Academy Award-winning "Talk To The Animals”. It made its world premiere at London’s Hammersmith Apollo in 1998, with TV personality Phillip Schofield playing Doctor Dolittle for the West End debut. The legendary entertainer Tommy Steele took over the reins for a UK tour in 2007.
ENSEMBLE’s production follows hot on the heels of the Hollywood blockbuster Dolittle starring Robert Downey Jr, released on 7th February. The stage show offers the chance to see this fantasy adventure brought to life, right before your very eyes, as the eccentric vet embarks on an extraordinary adventure with his human companions and exotic menagerie of animal friends to find the Giant Pink Sea Snail, who holds the secret of life and making the world a happier place. With help from the pushmi-pullyu and his trusty sidekick Polynesia, the larger-than-life Doctor Dolittle teaches us not only to talk to the animals but to listen to them as well.
