They girl-powered their way from the Edinburgh Fringe to the West End faster than Henry VIII could say “Off with their heads!” Now the world-famous Six are on their way to Blackpool.
Six the Musical brings the King’s ex-wives together for a 21st-century ‘historemix’. Little did its creators Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss know when they created the show whilst studying for their finals at Cambridge University, it would become a smash hit reaching Broadway and beyond.
Four years on, its now-famous girl band with attitude known as the Queendom has millions of loyal followers across the globe. Their monstrous ex must be turning in his Tudor grave.
The production takes the form of a pop concert with Henry’s unfortunate former spouses performing a sing-off to compete for the position of leading lady. Each tells their tale of wedded woe in a bid to prove they were the hardest-done-by – and therefore deserved of the girl band’s top title.
The result is a cleverly choreographed history lesson you won’t forget, translated into the modern-day context of dating apps and social media. In the end, the ex-wives bond over their shared stories of historical heartbreak, making girl power a phenomenon founded several centuries before the Spice Girls. This funny, feminist and ingenious show is full of witty innuendos, putting the misogynistic Henry VIII firmly in his place.
Six the Musical made its debut at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2017, performed by students from the Cambridge Musical Society. It went down a storm, packing out the Sweet Grassmarket and attracting rave reviews.
