Their first official release was the ’Forty Five EP’ on FactoryRecords in September 1985. Tony Wilson discovered them and they signed to Factory Records. Their first album ‘Squirrel and G-Man Twenty Four Hour Party People Plastic Face Carnt Smile’(White Out) released in 1987 and was produced by John Cale. This was followed by two classic albums, ‘Bummed’ in 1988, produced by Martin Hannett.
‘Pills ’n’ Thrills and Bellyaches in 1990 produced by PaulOakenfold and Steve Osborne which went platinum in the UK selling more than 350,000 copies. This put the band firmly on the map.
In 2022 the band were shocked at the death of founder member and much loved part of the Manchester musical family – bassist Paul Ryder. Shaun’s brother was the key to the band’s idiosyncratic groove and his unique bass was the spine to the band’s stand alone sound by putting the funk into their funkadelicnorthern powerhouse sound that was so influential. Mikey Shine rejoined the band on bass in July 2022. In December 2024 Rowetta left the band. Firouzeh Berry joined the band on backing vocals in January 2025.
