Unique venues, with plenty to celebrate
The Winter Gardens complex is one of the biggest entertainment complexes in Europe. Our venues range from the serene and intimate, to grand and awe-inspiring. The Winter Gardens’ architecture is a sight to behold, with stunning Victorian architecture on show, sitting alongside Art Deco design.
Throughout the 20th century, the Winter Gardens was one of the most highly esteemed entertainment venues in the UK. In fact, the first Royal Variety Performance to be held outside of London took place in the Opera House in 1955. The Royal Variety Performance returned to the Opera House in 2009.
Our venues have welcomed scores of superstars over the years. Entertainment heavyweights such as Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, and Judy Garland have all performed on the Opera House stage.
The Empress Ballroom has developed a reputation as one of the most important concert venues in the north, and has hosted performances from world-renowned acts like The Stone Roses, The Beatles, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, and Queen. In addition to this, the Empress Ballroom has been home to the Blackpool Dance Festival, one of the most famous dance competitions in the world, since its inception in 1920.
A part of British political history
The Winter Gardens is the historical home of political conferences in the north, with the three major political parties in the UK, Labour, the Conservatives, and the Liberal Democrats, all holding annual conferences here.
The complex was an important location for British politics throughout the 20th century.
